Jonny Steinberg is the author of several books about life after South Africa’s transition to democracy. Two of them, Midlands and The Number, won South Africa’s premier nonfiction award, the Sunday Times Alan Paton Prize. His latest book, Little Liberia, is in stores now. Jonny is about to take up a post at Oxford University teaching African Studies.

Mokena is an architect, designer, urbanist and visionary. He directs Makeka Design Lab, a laboratory practice founded in 2002 that provides innovative design solutions. He was selected as one of the Ordos 100 architects, he sits on the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council for Design and he is an advisor to the South African Minister of Human Settlements.
Professor Mark Swilling is Programme Coordinator: Sustainable Development Planning and Management in the School of Public Management and Planning, University of Stellenbosch and Academic Director of the Sustainability Institute. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Warwick and specialises in sustainable economic development, ecological design and cities.

His groundbreaking book “Wild Law” has played a significant role in informing and inspiring a growing international movement to recognise rights for Nature.
Art Director by day, Infographic maker by night, Ivan is a believer in the power of design to shape and positively change the world. With his internationally respected infographic project, Afrographique, he vividly captures the development and growth of the African continent through visually delightful and accessible information design.
Sarah is an Egyptian video blogger and artist. She recently graduated from the American University in Cairo where she studied Journalism and Theater. Her activism was taken from student- to nation-wide level during the January revolution. She is now dedicated to activism and citizen journalism for a smooth transition to democracy in Egypt.
Beatenberg is a young band of three from Cape Town. They play and sing original songs with words. In general, their music is quite sweet, and lately it’s been sounding more like the place they come from: South Africa. They’re not very loud, but they’re quite rhythmic. They’ll be making nice sounds throughout the day at TEDxStellenbosch.

Marika is Co-Founder of MASS Design Group, an architectural nonprofit dedicated to designing well-built environments that aid in the reduction of global poverty. Marika was a lead designer on the Butaro Hospital project in northern Rwanda. She is a graduate of Brown University and Harvard GSD, and will be serving in the first class of global residents at IDEO.org.

A native of Cote d’Ivoire, Eric Kacou is co-founder of ESPartners. He is the author of Entrepreneurial Solutions for Prosperity for BoP markets released in 2011. A Mason Fellow from the Harvard Kennedy School, Eric is also a graduate of the Wharton School. The World Economic Forum honored Eric as a Young Global Leader.

Stan is a photographer and publisher harbors a deep love for the technical, mechanical and physical attributes of bicycles and believes in the empowerment of bicycle ownership. He works on the Bicycle Portrait project with Nic Grobler, spending much of his time traveling through South Africa by bicycle, meeting and photographing everyday South Africans and their bicycles.
Andrew Boraine is Chief Executive of the Cape Town Partnership, and Adjunct Professor at the African Centre for Cities at UCT. Andrew has been involved in South Africa’s local government and urban development processes for the past thirty years, as activist, advisor, negotiator, government planner, city manager, facilitator, communicator and writer.

Steve is the Mobile Impact Evangelist at the mLab Southern Africa. He is passionate about the use of technology for social good. As the fellow for 21st Century Learning at the Shuttleworth Foundation he founded the Mobiles for Literacy project. Before that he was a research fellow at Stanford University, where he researched youth and digital media.
Joshua is a designer-entrepreneur and founder of REGIONAL, a diversified consultancy and design office. He is a partner at beyondMEASURE and strategic director at Groupshot, designing technology for informality. Joshua often works at the intersection of technology and society, having designed systems in developing countries around the world.
Nic Grobler has an international mobile office. It consists of laptops, a few cameras, dodgy internet connections, and at various times different modes of transport, including ferries, vans, motorcycles and skateboards - but it always includes a bicycle. Nic is a prolific, polymathic graphic designer and artist, that is nuts about bicycles and people who ride them.
Michael is the Executive Director of the World Class Cities Partnership, headquartered at Northeastern University. Michael establishes and develops relationships with municipal governments and universities around the world, creating a global network of partner cities dedicated to implementing public policy that effectively addresses their shared challenges.

The subsequent developments, Main Street Life, Revolution House, The Main Change and Fox Street Studios, have all formed part of the creation of The Maboneng Precinct: a vision for a regenerated Joburg City.
